Are pigs dangerous?

Delhi boy eaten by herd of pigs
A three-year-old boy has been eaten alive by a neighbour's herd of pigs on the outskirts of the Indian capital, Delhi, police say. The boy, Ajay, strayed from the family home as his parents and other family members were having lunch. When his mother went to look for him, she found the pigs chewing something and spotted bits of her son's clothing. She threw stones at the animals but they turned on her. Her screams alerted neighbours who came to her rescue.

'Playing'
Relatives in the village of Samaipur Badli in north-west Delhi told police the boy had been carrying bread, which might have led the animals to attack him. A senior police official, Manish Aggarwal, said a local man who owned the pigs had been detained for causing death due to negligence. "Three children were playing outside their house when the incident took place," Mr Aggarwal told the BBC. "The victim, Ajay, strayed from the area but his parents or relatives were not there to save him since they were having lunch inside their house."

Yes yes...SENTOSA!

Anyway, roamed there for half a day. Travelled practically to every spot inside that small tiny island, by bus, tram, skyride etc... Wheee...quite fun...but really everything in that island cost...

Anyway, one of the reflections in life, is to see the once bustling-with-life monorail stations and ferry terminal now becoming no-man's-land.

Forsaken monorail station at Fort Siloso

Where's the monorail?

Once the Mighty Burger King at the ferry terminal

Anyway, out of spirit of exploration and experimentation, took skyride and played the Luge 3 times (one time cost $8. 3 times cost $15, of course take the latter mah)

Whee... exploring sentosa is sure fun with a camera around. Nice break too!

Fill This Temple

A song that I have stumbled on youtube this morning, a song of commitment and dedication to all Christians who visit this blog.

FILL THIS TEMPLE (JIM CERNERO)

LET MY HEART BE THE TEMPLE OF YOUR SPIRIT
LET MY SPIRIT FEEL THE WARMTH OF YOUR EMBRACE
LET ME BE A HOLY HABITATION
WHERE YOUR SPIRIT IS PLEASED TO DWELL

CHORUS:
OH LORD I LONG TO KNOW YOUR GLORY
I WANT TO OFFER THE SACRIFICE OF PRAISE
FILL THIS TEMPLE LORD
WITH YOUR SPIRIT ONCE AGAIN

2) air con air rifle range
3) school bbq pit
4) air con fitness gym

Okay okay... hopefully some school management personnel will read my blog and get the hint of putting an air con fitness gym in our school...haha

Most tiring weekend

These few days happens to be the most days I have throughout the semester. So much more tiring than just examinations and throughout the sem.

Friday:

Morning, went to school to recce around NUS campus, in preparation for the student leadership camp two days later. Late morning, settle so much admin stuff in preparation for camp, alongside with fellow teachers Dr Seah, Mr Sukandar, Ms Loh and Mr Png.

Afternoon, supposedly meet form class for an outing at VIVO but due to lousy telephone communication, went to LIDO instead. Nevertheless, went home for rest for an hour before proceeding on to go school for Arts Fest

Night, supposed a time to relax and enjoy, but in the end need to talk to a parent regarding his son. So miss most of the fun. Managed to come for the disco night though.

Disco night: Music too loud, creating headache for me though. Later, camp briefing began. Helped ensure everything is in place (the teams are sorted out and rules have been briefed) before going home around 12 mn.

Sat: Went for brother's wedding. In the morning, took bridal car along with cousin Mark, who was the driver, as well as the my brother Gaius (who was the groom) to fetch his bride. When we reached the carpark, the 'sisters'were already in place to tekan the 'brothers'. MAde all of them climbed 10 storeys, ate wasabe as well as made my brother sang love song, before enabling him see his bride. Haha...thank God since Mark and I were important people, we just stood nearby and watched the fun.

After must effort, we finally brought the bride (with the groom) to the church.

In church, need to bring so much stuffs and logistics from car. Witnessed the tea ceremony, as well as set up in preparation for the ceremony. But this wedding is so different from other church ceremony. It's very funny, and that everyone seem to have a good time.

All the cousins toasting to the newly wed couple

Buffet lunch, went to coordinate the food. Apparently, there's plenty of food, but somehow, the caterers did not top up the food in time. So need to push them around to be more efficient. Then stayed on to help pack up and pulled out all the decorations. Stayed till 4+

Later accompanied another brother, Paul, to bring all the gifts and stuffs to Gaius' new place, dropped them down, before going home for a bathe, and a 10 min rest, before Mark picked me up to go pick up Gaius and he wife Siting to go to wedding banquet.

At the wedding benquet, although only family members are invited to attend, Paul and I need to be ushers to settle our guests. It's sumptuous meal, with abalone, crabmeat, sharkfin, drunken prawns, Beijing Duck. Sat with Sarah (Sec 2 cousin) Really cute...haha...Also get to see nephews Daniel and Samuel (3 yr old and 1 yr old boys)... so so so cute too.

After dinner, went back to school for the camp. Get to learn to dance partially the mass dance. Then ensured that students are in bed ...(some students so energetic, 12 midnite still say cant sleep)..then slept almost at 2 am.

Sunday Morning, woke up, did mass dance... went for breakfast, then 4 hours of planning with students for orientation camp, then lunch, then cheers practice (My group, Model the Way, with their super school cheer). Coordinated games, then buffet dinner, and last of all, presentation of their plans that they did in the morning. Went back home at 9pm

Monday: Went to school. Immediately sorted all the report books. Talked to more than 30 parents from 8.00 am - 4.oo pm (With only lunch break)..so tiring...flu somemore along with headache (many parents asked things like -- Why is my son/daughter's english/chinese so bad)... haha...errr I wanted to answer them frankly. "Errr...I don't teach english lor... " haha..but many parents are really sweet. And they are really concerned about their children, if only our students are able to appreciate the care and concern their parents give them.

Night: Went dinner at holland V with some colleagues, before coming back for more admin. went home at 9pm

Finally home sweet home...finally can rest...

Visit to our neighbour

Yesterday was Good neighbour's day. A group of students and me went to a block of flats next to our school to distribute some pretty nice post cards. Two girls happen to visit a 93 year old lady. Being helpful and nice (well done, girls!), the girls volunteered to bring some newspapers the next day to the old lady. So today, I accompanied the two girls to see the old granny. (I will like to take this opportunity to applaud these caring hearts that our students have. Keep on caring and encouraging!)

When we visit her flat, the granny greeted us warmly, and offered us drinks and nice tarts. At conversation, she mentioned how blessed we are compared to those of her generation, who had undergone both world wars. She was hard of hearing, so we use written words to communicate with her, though she is proficient in English and could still speak well.

However her passion came as she talked to us about Christianity and Jesus Christ. In fact, she has told us for more than half hour about the importance of Jesus in someone’s life, and even asked us to help distribute some photostated (but the original was painstakingly hand-written) flyers that she has written to our friends. In fact, she has around 100 flyers. I ask her to keep for herself, but she lamented that she hardly have any visitors these days, yet there was so much so much what she wanted to tell people. Of course I reluctantly took 2-3 flyers, but to help her spread her message to people, I will write the words of the flyers in this blog.

It is the message of Christmas, the message of love and hope. Below is what the flyers said:

Mark 14:38 – Matt 26:41 “Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

One of the saddest elements in the Gethsemane experience was the disappointment of Jesus in His disciples. He asked the three most loved of them to be near Him in His great agony. He craved the help of their sympathy. But when He came back to them, hoping to be strengthened by their love, he found them asleep. Peter, James and John.

Of these years of my Christian faith I was wondering why every Christmas card has the robin red breast. A legend of the Britain peasants tells how the robin got its red breast. As Jesus was led out to Calvary, a bird, pitying Him, flew down and plucked on thorn from the crown of thorns he wore. The blood spurted from the wound and splashed the bird’s breast. Ever since, the peasant say, the robin has had a spot of red on its breast in remembrance of its pity for the Master that day. The disciples had it in their power that night, not to pluck thorns from their Master’s brow, but to strengthen Him by their sympathy. They had missed their opportunity, however, and only made Gethsemane harder for Him.

Blessings on all who revere and trust the Lord – on all who obey Him! Their reward shall be prosperity and happiness. Your wife shall be contented in your home. And look at all those children! There they sit around the dinner table as vigorous and healthy as young olive trees. That is God’s reward to those who revere and trust Him. May the Lord continually bless you with heaven’s blessings as well as with human joys. May you live to enjoy your grandchildren! And may God bless your home with warmth and many true friends. (Psalm 128)

We owe our true friends’ fingers, touches, delicate and beautiful on the canvas of our souls, there will be a silver thread every life-web woven into the fabric by pure friendships.

Heartprints. Each person’s fingerprints are unique. We each have a unique heart print that can touch another. We pray about encouraging others. “O God, wherever I go today, help me leave heartprints! Heartprints of compassion, understanding, and love. Heartprints of kindness and genuine concern. May my heart touch a lonely neighbour or runaway daughter of an anxious mother or an aged grandfather. Send me out today to leave heartprints. And if someone should say, “I felt your touch.” May the one sense Your love touching through me.

A homeless man was standing outside a fast-food restaurant asking for money. A customer went in and bought an extra hamburger for him. Before the customer settle to eat He looked out the glass window and saw the homeless man started to unwrap the hamburger to a homeless woman with a child who were sitting on the sidewalk.

A Christian lady volunteer who took an old man to an annual Christmas party for elderly people. This old man mentioned that he could not control his bladder, and that he might wet her expensive car seat. The volunteer lady replied spontaneously. Don’t worry I can clean it up. What is important is that I get you to the Christmas party. This lady openly displayed her love for people and not things. Jesus saith, we should not treasure possession for they won’t last into eternity.

As I grow older I’m learning to lean more on God and His faithfulness over the years. He held me by my right hand when I fell twice it was not utterly cast down. (Ps 37:24) As age has its trouble-failing hearing, dim eyesight, forgetful many things, aching backs, rheumatoid arthritis toes and fingers and soft knees, aging and weakness focus our thoughts on God, we learn to fix our eyes on Him and on unseen realities. We learn to distinguish between permanent and what is passing away. I still need friends to warm my winter years?

With love from Sylvea

THE GIFT OF CHRISTMAS 25/12
When they saw the Star they rejoiced with exceedingly joy (Matt 2:10) In everything give thanks to the Lord Jesus for His precious gift laid on the altar of the world for the redemption of sinners (Eph 5:20)

CHRISTMAS IS THE OIL OF JOY
Doors creak, our lives also creak and grate and needs to be lubricated with oil of joy which is
(1) Oil of gentleness
(2) Oil of thoughtfulness
(3) Oil of helpfulness
(4) Oil of Cheerfulness.
Give of your talents and money generously. Your gifts will return to you later.

Take the tinsel and the glitter and the Santas all away,
For God’s love is far, far greater than this man-made grand display.
The Christmas Tree reminds of Christ being hung on a wooden cross when He was crucified and now “An Evergreen Tree” which means “Eternal Life!”

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel! Born is the King of Israel!

CHRISTMAS IS LOVE
Christmas is a time of meditation on the wonders of the love of God who gave His only Son, as a ransom for us. Christmas ought to be a time of worship and of fellowship around God’s word, when we hear again the story of His birth. It should not be a day of festivities, when families and friends exchange gifts. But a day to commemorate the gift laid on the altar of the world for the redemption of sinners. It is the most appropriate time to consecrate a portion from both abounding riches and scanty poverty to send forth the good tidings of great joy into all the world. To see the needs of your fellowmen behind their faces and hearts that are hungering for real joy, the joy that only can be gained by knowing the true meaning of life…
Life upon this world is just an episode. A journey… we only pass through this way once. Sow seeds of encouragement, to remember the weakness and loneliness of those who are growing old.
As you celebrate Christmas do you think what it means to you? Do you rejoice because Christ the Savior was born and died on the cross for our sins? When you see a Christmas tree are you not reminded about the wooden cross upon which He was crucified? Why must this tree be an “Evergreen”? Does it not symbolize the Eternal life which is ours through Christ? (Jn 10:27-28) My sheep recognize my voice, and I know them, they follow me. I give them Eternal Life and they shall never perish, no man can snatch them from my hands. Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Amen.

Standing Among Giants

It's so stressful to be standing among GIANTS when in fact you aren't. But thank God the GIANTS that I stand among with are encouraging and edifying. The question remains: Will I be an encouraging GIANT in due time as well?

Minister of State for Education Visit

This morning, the Minister of State for Education, RADM (NS) Lui Tuck Yew came to our school for an informal chat with some students with regards to their life, as well as how they felt with regards to some events and policies that the government has made.

RADM (NS) Lui in a forum chatting with students

RADM (NS) Lui chatting with students during break time.

Really glad to have sessions such as these. Indeed, Mr Lui has been a very friendly MP personally, very approachable with no airs. Indeed, this the 2nd time I heard him speak in the past 2 months (First time was at 1 Sep Teacher's Day). His answers are really relevant and also set our students to be thinking beyond their studies and school life.

Glad that our students come up with very good questions, which shows that they really ponder before asking the Guest of Honour. Furthermore, they are polite in asking questions. Well done! However, I feel that our students, as well as the young people nowadays, need to brush up with their General Knowledge as well as current affairs. This is indeed true, when at times, there was this awkward silence after the Guest-of-honour askes, "Did you read about the recent event that ...?"

Kudos to the NE Department of MOE as well.

Also, Congratulations to Daniel and Huifen for their marriage. May God bless them greatly.

Marking vs Packing

Whee....marking almost completed with all the rest of the admin... so happy!
However, finally figured something which is worst than marking......
....
....
....
....
Packing my staff room table! haha (packing and marking rythms ....)
So many things to pack...
So many files to upkeep...
...
...
...
...
It's worst than marking...
Marking: It is tiring, but after the first few scripts, it becomes monotonous once you have memorized the answers...
Packing: every single worksheet, every single piece of note, every single document, you must use your brain to see where to insert... tiring sia...
...
...
...
...
Kapow! Kapow! The sound just rattled on in the staffroom and on as my hole puncher punches through the paper ... but the sense of satisfaction is there when you see your files getting thicker...
...
...
...
...
Tomorrow ... another day of packing ...

12.00 ... Lunch time ... go canteen

Post-exams

Congratulations to all my yr 1 and yr 2 students who have completed their exams. Enjoy your holidays!

Bon voyage to one of my student, Vardini, who is going back to India. All the best to wherever you go. You can still contact me by tagging onto this blog!

For fellow teachers in my school...press on! I know like me, they have nuclear piles of exam scripts to mark...for many, our weekends will be burnt, condemned to be at home staring at horrendous handwritings.... and after going through the baptism of papers, we have to key in the marks...prep for post-exam activities.... press on guys! Holidays is 3 weeks away :)

Time to share what happen to me yesterday and today:

Yesterday (A day to meet up with old friends)
Marked scripts till 5pm. Phew! Then went cityhall. In the mrt, met one university friend who is studying in NIE. Wow. glad he managed to survive in his practicum school... haha...now enjoying life in NIE before his final posting... really made me recall the feelings i have some 6 months ago...
Then reached cityhall... since I was early for my appointment, I decided to go to Funan, where I bumped into an NS friend. Wow. Glad to catch up with him, and that he has managed to find himself a job. Glad he is as cheerful and friendly as usual.
Then went to Sushi Teh in Raffles city. Met up with siblings and cousins for dinner, where one cousing treated us. Indeed, this was the only gathering we had since chinese new year... wow...people really got busy when they started to work! But we talked about the days of old...indeed the few of us always play together when we are little...from a fews yrs old till now...we grew up together (all of us almost of the same age) and went outings in primary, secondary school...etc... Now seeing that one by one, some of us will be getting married soon, we can really say that we have grown up. One cousin can even recall games that we play when we are just 6-7 yrs old!
Then after dinner, I bumped into another JC friend....
Wow it seems that the world (or singapore) is really so small.

This morning, went to school for invilgilation
Wow...shock of my life

My students: Brilliant in math (my pride and joy wat?)... but can't say for english leh...
One question: It goes something like this: Boy goes to shopping center and spend x min walking TO there. Then boy goes home and spend y min walking FROM the shopping center to home. A few sentences later, the question read, "Find the time the boy walks TO the shopping center." Halfway through the paper, one student raised his hand, "Do we find the time he walk to the shopping center or from?" I went up to him and point him the word "TO" from the question. A few minutes later another hand popped up and ask me the same question. And another. And another. In the end, about 4-5 students ask me the same question. Hello!!! Read the question lar... my english not so jialat right?

Of course, I am suprised at some of the questions they ask. Some are really good questions, and they are sharp in finding out details. Like one, he mentioned that my rectangle is not drawn to scale, which is true, although the length of the sides are still unknown. Really really sharp eyes. Keep those questions coming in. I enjoy answering them.

Anyway, can see my students beaming with signs of relief and happiness after the paper. Glad they are happy.

In the evening. Went down to church, where we prayed for people who are unwell. It seems that many people are falling sick this time of the year. Take care!

Signs students are taking exams

The following are signs that students are taking exams...

1) There's a lack of blogging activities... no blogging entries
2) MSN is still on... with lots of Aways and Busy, and words like "I can't take stress sia!"
3) Students go home in big batches.
4) Students gather around the school hall in big batches after morning assembly.
5) You can't see them in Orchard, Vivocity or any shopping areas after school.
6) They keep asking the teachers, "Will the paper be hard?"
7) Small groups of students crowding around a teacher can be observed frequently outside the staffroom.

Anyway, I am so excited now as this is the very first exam I will be taking part not as a candidate (after 6+4+2+4 = 16 years as a student), but as a teacher and invilgilator! Haha. That means I get to see the faces of others in agony in the school hall, and no one is going to see mine when I submerge myself in the hundreds of scripts for marking after the exams.... hahaha
